Mykines is reached by ferry from Sørvágur, which is the end of bus route 300.

The part people forget

Getting back from Mykines

This is the most weather-exposed return in the country. An Atlantic crossing on a small vessel can be cancelled at short notice in either direction, which means being left on Mykines overnight is a real outcome rather than a theoretical one. Never plan a Mykines day immediately before a flight home.

Walking and hiking connections

The path to the lighthouse on Mykineshólmur, the walk most people come for, is closed because of a landslide. Visit Faroe Islands (read 13 October 2026) says more landslides are possible in the area and that it is unsafe to walk there; hikes to other parts of Mykines remain available. Do not plan the trip around the lighthouse, and check Visit Faroe Islands' hiking-fees page for the current position before you travel.

Where Mykines is. An approximate centre for the settlement. It is not a bus stop, a boarding point or a trailhead — check the operator's own stop names against the route page before you rely on it.

  • Bus route 300 runs from Tórshavn via Vágar Airport to Sørvágur, the ferry port.
  • Ferry route 36 crosses to Mykines in a published 45 minutes, in season only.
  • The Tourist Travel Card explicitly excludes route 36, so the crossing is paid for separately.

Mykines in brief

Mykines is the westernmost island, known for its puffin colonies. The lighthouse path is closed after a landslide (see below). Reaching it means a seasonal ferry from Sørvágur that the Tourist Travel Card does not cover.

Mykines village. Route 300 gets you to Sørvágur all week; the crossing from there is seasonal, excluded from the Tourist Travel Card, and the one leg of this journey the weather can cancel in either direction.

  1. The puffin colonies

    Nesting seabirds along the cliffs through the summer season.

  2. Mykineshólmur lighthouse

    The path to the islet and its lighthouse is closed because of a landslide, and unsafe to walk. Other Mykines hikes are open; check the current position before you go.

  3. A village of a dozen or so

    Mykines has a tiny year-round population and very limited facilities. Bring what you need.

Good to know

  • Walking Mykines outside the marked infields around the village requires an approved Faroese guide and a hiking fee — and the puffin colonies are outside the infields. The boundary is signposted at the harbour in Sørvágur and again on the island. Visit Faroe Islands publishes the rule as applying between 1 May and 31 August.

  • SSL warns that boarding may require a small step or jump between the vessel and the quay while it is still moving.

  • Book the crossing through SSL's booking system rather than arriving and hoping for a space.
