A cruise day in Tórshavn: on foot and by free bus
Last checked: 14 October 2026
The short answer
You do not need a tour to enjoy a day in Tórshavn. The tourist board says most sights, restaurants and cafés are within walking distance of the harbour, and the town buses are free for visitors. Walk Tinganes, the old town and Skansin first; ride a free red bus to the National Museum on the edge of town; meet the bus at Steinatún, where every town route stops. Your berth depends on the ship — the port has 3.5 km of quays — so ask the ship which quay, and keep a margin before all-aboard.

Where you come ashore
The Port of Tórshavn has 3,500 metres of quays and publishes its cruise-call calendar on its website; it does not say on its front page which quay a given ship uses, and neither do we. Ask your ship. The port office is at Eystara bryggja 34, and Smyril Line's Norröna, the ferry from Denmark, docks right in the heart of town.

A walking loop from the harbour
The tourist board's own suggested order works well on foot:
- Tinganes, the flat rocky point between the two harbours, where the Viking parliament first met around the year 900 and the Faroese Home Rule government still works in the turf-roofed houses. There are no armed guards: visitors are free to wander.
- The old town, á Reyni, with its black-tarred, turf-roofed houses, then Tórshavn Cathedral.
- Vágsbotn, the lively harbour square, for a coffee.
- Skansin, the fort overlooking the harbour, for the view.
- Viðarlundin, the park, for a quiet walk before you head back.

The free red buses
Tórshavn's town buses have been free for visitors as well as residents since 2019, and the tourist board suggests a red city bus as a way to see most of the town. Every town route meets at Steinatún square, which is also where Visit Tórshavn has its office — the place to ask which bus goes where. The regional buses to the rest of the islands are a different, ticketed service that starts at the Farstøðin terminal.

Further than town: only with a margin
With a long call, the regional network will take you out of Tórshavn: route 100 to Vestmanna for the bird-cliff boats, or a ferry to Nólsoy. But these run on published timetables rather than every few minutes, and a missed bus back is a missed ship. Look up the return on our route or ferry page before you go, and take the one before the one that fits. For anything further, a shore excursion that guarantees your return is the honest choice.

Asked before you go
What people search for
- Can you walk from the cruise port to Tórshavn's sights?
- Yes. The tourist board says most attractions, restaurants and cafés are within walking distance of the harbour and the centre; Tinganes, the old town and Skansin are the obvious first loop.
- Are the buses in Tórshavn free for cruise passengers?
- Yes: the town buses are free for everyone, and all of them meet at Steinatún square. Regional SSL buses are ticketed.
- Which quay does my ship use?
- Ask the ship. The Port of Tórshavn publishes its cruise-call calendar, but its front page does not assign ships to quays, so we will not guess.
No signal in the valley? The timetable is already on your phone
Faroe Bus for Android plans SSL bus and ferry trips by place and keeps the timetables on your phone when the signal drops — in the valleys and on the trails, where the tourist board warns coverage can be limited, the bus home is still one tap away.
