Visiting the Faroe Islands without a car

These need one bus or one ferry, with no booking beyond a ticket.

• → Tórshavn — the hub, with free town buses inside the municipality.
• → Vágar Airport and Sørvágur — route 300, which is not published as weekday-only.
• → Klaksvík — route 400 all week, or the weekday express 401.
• → Vestmanna — route 100, for the bird-cliff boats.
• → Nólsoy — ferry route 90 from the middle of Tórshavn, a published 30-minute crossing.
• → Sandoy — route 650 through the subsea tunnel, no ferry involved.

These are reachable, but only if you meet the condition — and the condition is usually invisible until you are standing at the stop.

• → Gjógv — route 201 from Oyrarbakki is request-only. Telephone +298 233320 between 07:00 and 20:00, and book the return at the same time.
• → Tjørnuvík — route 202 from Oyrarbakki runs Monday to Friday on a schoolday calendar, with no weekend service and a long list of holiday dates with none.
• → Bøur and the west of Vágar — route 350 is weekdays only, with a small number of trips each way.
• → Mykines — ferry route 36 in season only, excluded from the Tourist Travel Card, and cancellable in bad weather in either direction.
• → Suðuroy — reachable, but the ferry is a published 2h 05min each way, which is four hours of a day return.

Saksun has no scheduled bus. The nearest thing to a car-free route is the mountain path from Tjørnuvík, which is a hillwalk in exposed terrain with no transport waiting at the far end. For most visitors the honest answer to Saksun is a taxi, a tour or a rental car.

Base yourself in Tórshavn, treat each day as one destination rather than three, and check the return departure before the outward one. Sørvágur is the other base worth considering if Vágar and Mykines are your priority, because it sits at the end of an all-week route and beside a ferry berth.
