Luggage and bicycles on Faroese buses and ferries
Last checked: 14 October 2026
The short answer
No SSL page this site reads publishes a luggage allowance for the Bygdaleiðir buses or the ferries: there is no size limit, bag count or fee to quote, so this guide does not invent one. What is published is narrower. Visit Faroe Islands says most buses will take a bicycle; Tórshavn municipality says its free town buses take bicycles space permitting, with an evening rule, and that the blue SSL buses take them space permitting for an extra fee; and the tourist board says there is no luggage storage at Vágar Airport, but there is storage at the bus terminal in Tórshavn.

Suitcases on the bus and the ferry
SSL's route pages, fare pages and customer-service pages publish nothing about luggage, so there is no rule to pass on. In practice the airport bus is a scheduled coach and the airport says tickets are sold on board. If a bag is unusual, large or many, ask the driver, or ask SSL before you travel through its customer-service contact rather than relying on a travel forum.

Bicycles
Three official pages mention bicycles, and they say slightly different things.
- Visit Faroe Islands: most buses allow you to bring a bicycle, and it suggests taking one to Sørvágur for the road to Gásadalur and Bøur, and cycling from Oyrarbakki to Saksun or Tjørnuvík.
- Tórshavn municipality, on its free red town buses: bicycles can be brought on board space permitting, after a set hour in the late afternoon. Read its page for the hour; this site does not copy times.
- Tórshavn municipality, on the blue SSL intercity buses: bicycles can be brought on board space permitting, for an extra fee. SSL itself publishes no bicycle fee that this site has read.

Left luggage
The tourist board's airport page says there is no luggage storage at the airport, and that there is a storage at the bus terminal in Tórshavn. For empty boxes, bicycle boxes for example, it says to contact the airport administration at [email protected]. No official page this site reads publishes the terminal storage's hours or price, so ask at the terminal.

Airline luggage and lost bags
The airport's luggage page says the rules for the size and weight of your luggage vary by airline, and some airlines vary them by destination, departure place and ticket type. For lost or damaged luggage it directs passengers to Atlantic Airways on (+298) 34 10 00 or [email protected].

Boarding the Mykines ferry with bags
SSL warns that boarding and disembarking at Mykines require a small step or jump between the vessel and the quay, because the vessel may still be moving alongside. A day pack is the right luggage for that crossing; a suitcase is not.

The helicopter
The tourist board explains that the helicopter is subsidised and mainly for residents. None of the sources this site reads publishes its baggage limits, so none are given here; the helicopter guide sets out what is and is not known.

No signal in the valley? The timetable is already on your phone
Faroe Bus for Android plans SSL bus and ferry trips by place and keeps the timetables on your phone when the signal drops — in the valleys and on the trails, where the tourist board warns coverage can be limited, the bus home is still one tap away.
