Three routes need more than turning up
Route 201 to Gjógv is by request only and must be telephoned for in advance. Routes 202 to Tjørnuvík, 350 to Bøur and 401 to Klaksvík are published as weekdays only. Check your date against the operator's timetable before you build a day around any of them.

Bus 300 The connection nearly every visitor makes first
Vágar Airport → Tórshavn
Route 300 runs from the airport terminal building to the Tórshavn bus and ferry terminal, continuing west to Sørvágur in the other direction.
- Tourist Travel Cards are sold on board, as well as at the airport information centre.
- Departures are spread through the day rather than frequent — check the day columns against your flight.

Airport bus Conditional The waterfall village, and the awkward truth about reaching it
Tórshavn → Gásadalur
Bus 300 to Sørvágur, then weekday route 350 to Bøur. On the timetable valid from 31 August 2026, Bøur is the last published stop and Gásadalur does not appear at all.
- Route 350 is published as weekdays only, with a small number of trips each way.
- Re-check the current route 350 timetable close to your travel date — the published position here changes with the season.

Bus 400 The northern trunk route, and the interchange everything hangs off
Tórshavn → Klaksvík
Route 400 runs all week between Tórshavn and Klaksvík across Eysturoy; the weekday express 401 covers the same corridor with fewer stops.
- Oyrarbakki on route 400 is the interchange for Eiði, Gjógv and Tjørnuvík.
- The express 401 skips Oyrarbakki, so it is the wrong bus if you are connecting onwards.

Seasonal Puffins, a 45-minute crossing, and a weather risk worth taking seriously
Tórshavn → Mykines
Bus 300 to Sørvágur, then ferry route 36 in season. The Tourist Travel Card does not cover this crossing.
- Sailings run in published season windows only; outside them there is no service at all.
- Cancellations happen in both directions, so never plan Mykines for the day before a flight home.

Bus 300 to Sørvágur, then weekday route 350 to Bøur — the nearest published stop. No published service beyond Sørvágur at weekends.

Bus 400 all week, or the weekday express 401.
- Tórshavn Vestmanna
Bus 100, with a marked transfer at Effo í Kollafjarðardalur on some trips.
- Tórshavn Gjógv
Bus 400 to Oyrarbakki, then request route 201 — telephone +298 233320 in advance, and book the return too.
- Tórshavn Tjørnuvík
Bus 400 to Oyrarbakki, then route 202. Weekdays only — no weekend service.
- Tórshavn Saksun
No scheduled bus serves Saksun. The car-free option is the mountain path from Tjørnuvík; otherwise a taxi, tour or rental car.
- Tórshavn Nólsoy
Ferry route 90 from the harbour in the middle of town, a published 30 minutes.
- Tórshavn Mykines
Bus 300 to Sørvágur, then seasonal ferry route 36. Not covered by the Tourist Travel Card, and weather-dependent.
- Tórshavn Suðuroy
Ferry route 7 on M/F Smyril, a published 2h 05min, then bus route 700 from the ferry berth.
- Vágar Airport Tórshavn
Bus 300 from the terminal building to the Tórshavn bus and ferry terminal.
- Vágar Airport Sørvágur
Bus 300 continues west from the airport to Sørvágur.
- Vágar Airport Gásadalur
Weekday route 350 calls at the airport and continues to Bøur. At weekends there is no published service beyond Sørvágur.
- Vágar Airport Mykines
Bus 300 west to Sørvágur, then the seasonal Mykines ferry.
- Vágar Airport Klaksvík
Bus 300 towards Tórshavn, then route 400. The connection at the Kollafjørður tunnel stop requires prior notification — otherwise change in Tórshavn.

Bus 400 all week, or the weekday express 401.

Bus 400 south to Oyrarbakki, then the request-only route 201.

Nólsoy is 30 minutes from the middle of Tórshavn, Kalsoy is 20 minutes from Klaksvík, Mykines is seasonal from Sørvágur, and Suðuroy is the long southern crossing.

Faroese transport is organised by route number, not by destination. Once you know you want route 300 or route 400, the operator's own timetable becomes easy to read.

Check the day, not just the time
Routes 202, 350 and 401 are published as weekdays only, and several branches run on a schoolday calendar with holiday dates carrying no service at all.

Read the return column before you travel out
Branch routes end in villages with nothing else running. The last departure back is the fact that decides whether a day trip is possible, and it is often earlier than a long northern evening suggests.

What it costs to travel
Two numbers are worth knowing before you arrive, and one of them is zero.
The Tourist Travel Card
SSL sells a 4-day adult card at 500 DKK and a 7-day adult card at 700 DKK, with children at half those prices. Once you buy your first ticket on the card it is valid for the next three or six consecutive days.
- Sold at the Tórshavn Ferry Terminal, the Vágar Airport information centre, and on board route 300.
- Covers buses and ferries without a seat reservation.
- Not refundable for cash.

The exclusions matter more than the price, because one of them covers the trip most visitors want to make.
- Route 36 to Mykines is excluded outright.
- Vehicle transport on the ferries is not covered.
- Pre-booked tickets requiring a seat reservation are not covered.
- Special event trips are excluded, including Ovastevna on Nólsoy.

The town buses run by Tórshavnar kommuna are free of charge for residents and visitors, and have been since 2019. They are a separate service from SSL's regional routes.

There is one airport in the Faroe Islands, and one scheduled bus corridor serving it. That makes the arrival simple — and makes the onward connections worth understanding before you land.
Airport to Tórshavn
Route 300 runs between the terminal building and the Tórshavn bus and ferry terminal. It is not published as a weekday-only service, which makes it the connection to rely on.
- Buy a Tourist Travel Card on board or at the airport information centre.
- Check the day columns against your arrival time rather than assuming an even frequency.

Scheduled departures thin out in the evening across the whole network. If your flight lands late, confirm the last route 300 departure before you rely on it, and have a fallback in mind.

Is there a bus from Vágar Airport to Tórshavn?
Yes. Route 300 runs between the airport terminal building and the Tórshavn bus and ferry terminal, and it is not published as a weekday-only service. Tourist Travel Cards are sold on board.

Can I reach Gásadalur by bus?
Not directly on the current timetables. Route 300 ends at Sørvágur, and weekday route 350 continues to Bøur, which on the timetable valid from 31 August 2026 is its final stop — Gásadalur does not appear on it. Re-check route 350 close to your travel date, because the published position changes with the season.

Is there a bus to Saksun?
No. No scheduled route in the SSL network publishes a stop in Saksun. The car-free option is the mountain path from Tjørnuvík, which is a serious hillwalk with no transport at the Saksun end.

Are the buses in Tórshavn really free?
The town buses are. Tórshavnar kommuna has run them free of charge for residents and visitors since 2019. The regional Bygdaleiðir routes operated for SSL are ticketed separately.

How much is the Faroe Islands travel card?
SSL's Tourist Travel Card is 500 DKK for four days and 700 DKK for seven days for adults, and 250 DKK and 350 DKK respectively for children. It does not cover the Mykines ferry, vehicles or pre-booked seat reservations.

Do I need to book the bus to Gjógv?
Yes. Route 201 is a request service: SSL states that all departures must be booked on +298 233320 between 07:00 and 20:00, with advance notice. Book the return in the same call.

Can I visit the Faroe Islands without a car?
Yes, with a shorter list than the guidebooks suggest. Tórshavn, Klaksvík, Vestmanna, Sørvágur, Nólsoy, Sandoy and Suðuroy work on scheduled services. Gjógv needs a telephone booking, Tjørnuvík and the west of Vágar are weekdays only, and Saksun has no bus at all.
