Faroese buses and ferries on Sundays and public holidays

Last checked: 19 September 2026

The short answer

The trunk routes keep going and the branches stop. Route 400 to Klaksvík runs all week, and route 300 to the airport is not published as weekday-only, though its weekend pattern differs from the weekday one. Routes 202 to Tjørnuvík, 350 to Bøur and 401, the Klaksvík express, are published as Monday to Friday, and the schoolday calendars behind several branches carry long lists of holiday dates with no service. SSL prints public-holiday deviations on the route page itself, so read the page for your date instead of assuming a Sunday service.

Weekend service, route by route

What SSL publishes about Saturdays and Sundays on the routes visitors use most.

  • Route 400, Tórshavn to Klaksvík: all week.
  • Route 300, Tórshavn to the airport and Sørvágur: not published as weekday-only, but the weekend pattern differs from the weekday one and departures are spread across the day rather than frequent.
  • Route 401, the Klaksvík express: Monday to Friday. At weekends, route 400 is the service to check.
  • Route 202, Oyrarbakki to Tjørnuvík: Monday to Friday only. There is no Saturday or Sunday bus.
  • Route 350, Tórshavn to Bøur: Monday to Friday only. At weekends there is no published service west of Sørvágur, which is why Gásadalur needs another plan on a Saturday or Sunday.
  • Route 201, Oyrarbakki to Gjógv: by request on every day it runs, and its table marks trips by day of the week, so check your day before you telephone.

Public holidays: what SSL prints

SSL does not publish one national holiday timetable. Each route page carries its own deviations, and they differ. The route 201 page prints a deviation table for the year: on New Year's Day, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Day, Easter Monday, Great Prayer Day, Ascension Day, Whit Sunday, Whit Monday, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Eve it says simply that there is no route, and on Ólavsøka eve and Ólavsøka day, the national holiday at the end of July, the route runs like a Sunday.

  • Route 350 marks some trips in green and withdraws them during the autumn school holiday.
  • Route 202 runs on a schoolday calendar valid from 12 August 2026 to 18 June 2027, with a long list of holiday dates carrying no service.
  • Route 700 on Suðuroy adjusts its holiday timetables around the arrivals and departures of the Smyril ferry.
  • Read the deviation table on the SSL page of your route for the date you travel. A holiday that is a normal day elsewhere in Europe can be a no-service day here.

Tórshavn's free town buses

The municipality says four of its five city routes run every day of the week, at least once an hour, and that the system is free for residents and visitors. The village routes are different: route 5 to Kirkjubøur and Kaldbak and route 6 to Kollafjørður are weekdays only, and on Saturdays route 7 links the villages on a single route. The municipality's page names no Sunday village service, so ask Bussleiðin before you count on one.

Ferries around holidays

The ferries sail at weekends, but their holiday patterns are published per route.

  • Nólsoy, ferry route 90: sailings are adjusted around holidays and around St. Olaf's Days at the end of July.
  • Suðuroy, ferry route 7: SSL notes you can line up at Krambatangi an hour before departure, and an hour and a half before the Sunday afternoon sailing, which tells you how full that one gets.
  • Mykines, ferry route 36: the days of the week it sails change with the season. In the winter table SSL sails on three days a week; in the autumn table it sails every day. Read the table for your dates.

Sundays in the hills

From 2 November to 31 December is hare-hunting season. The tourist board says hunting takes place in the mountains all across the country on any day except Sunday, and advises against hiking in that season. If you hike in it anyway, Sunday is the day the hills are quiet.

What people search for

Do Faroese buses run on Sundays?
The trunk routes do: route 400 to Klaksvík all week, and route 300 to the airport with a different weekend pattern. Routes 202, 350 and 401 are published as Monday to Friday only.
Do the buses run on public holidays?
It depends on the route. Route 201's page lists the national holidays on which there is no route at all, and runs like a Sunday at Ólavsøka; other routes publish their own deviations and schoolday calendars. Read the SSL page for your route and date.
Is there a bus to Tjørnuvík or Bøur at the weekend?
No. Route 202 to Tjørnuvík and route 350 to Bøur are published as Monday to Friday, so a weekend visit needs a car, a taxi or a tour.

No signal in the valley? The timetable is already on your phone

Faroe Bus for Android plans SSL bus and ferry trips by place and keeps the timetables on your phone when the signal drops — in the valleys and on the trails, where the tourist board warns coverage can be limited, the bus home is still one tap away.
