Getting back: the last bus and ferry in the Faroe Islands

Last checked: 19 September 2026

The short answer

Read the return column before you take the outward bus. Strandfaraskip Landsins publishes every route and every ferry on its own timetable page, and that page, read on the day you travel, is the authority for the last departure: SSL reissues seasonal and schoolday timetables several times a year, so a time read anywhere else is only as current as the day it was copied. The branches are where days go wrong. Route 202 to Tjørnuvík and route 350 to Bøur run on weekdays only, route 201 to Gjógv runs only when it has been booked, and the Mykines crossing can be cancelled at short notice in either direction.

Where the last departure is published

Every route page on this site links to that route's own SSL timetable page, and every ferry page to its sailing list; the free town buses are published by Tórshavn municipality. Read the column for the direction back, on the day of the week you are travelling, and check that the table in front of you is the season and the school calendar in force. Then decide which departure you want and work backwards to how long that leaves you at the far end.

  • The outward journey is rarely the problem: the trunk routes start at the Tórshavn terminal and run through the day.
  • The last departure from a village can be hours earlier than a long summer evening suggests, because the branch routes follow schoolday and seasonal calendars rather than the daylight.
  • A timetable copied onto a hotel sheet or a blog is a timetable from another season. The operator's page is the current one.

The returns that end early or need a booking

These are the services where the return leg needs deciding before the outward one.

  • Route 202, Oyrarbakki to Tjørnuvík: published as Monday to Friday on a schoolday calendar with holiday dates carrying no service, so the last bus back is a weekday schoolday bus or nothing.
  • Route 350, Tórshavn to Bøur: weekdays only, with a small number of trips each way, some on schooldays only, and the green-marked trips withdrawn during the autumn holiday. Nothing is published beyond Sørvágur at weekends.
  • Route 201, Oyrarbakki to Gjógv: every departure is by request, telephoned for at least two hours ahead during the line's published hours. Book the return at the same time as the outward trip, because a bus that has not been asked for does not come.
  • Route 401, the Klaksvík express: weekdays only. At a weekend the service to check for the way back is route 400.
  • Route 650 to Sandoy runs through the subsea tunnel, so there is no ferry to miss on that corridor.

Ferries: a last sailing is a published departure, not a promise

A row in a ferry timetable says when SSL intends to sail, not that it will. This site never says a sailing is running or cancelled; the operator does, on the day.

  • Mykines, ferry route 36: in season only and excluded from the Tourist Travel Card. As this site's Mykines page puts it, an Atlantic crossing on a small vessel can be cancelled at short notice in either direction, so a day trip can turn into a night on the island.
  • Kalsoy, ferry route 56: the late-evening departure runs only on request, arranged by telephone earlier the same day.
  • Suðuroy, ferry route 7: a published 2h 05min each way, and vehicles must be queued at least 15 minutes before departure.
  • Nólsoy, ferry route 90: arrive at least 10 minutes before departure with a valid ticket. Sailings are adjusted around holidays and around St. Olaf's Days at the end of July.

If you miss it

No SSL page this site reads publishes anything after the last departure on its table, and no official source publishes a taxi fare, so none is quoted here. The tourist board itself notes that the frequency of the Oyrarbakki branch buses is low. What the official pages do say is where to turn.

  • At Vágar Airport, the airport says several taxi companies offer their services from the airport to other towns and villages, and shows where the taxis wait in the parking zone.
  • In Tórshavn, the municipality points visitors to Visit Tórshavn for an airport taxi, and its town-bus office, Bussleiðin, answers questions about the free town routes on 30 20 10.
  • For a question about an SSL route or sailing, use the operator's customer-service contact rather than a third party.
  • In a village with no later bus, the honest options are a taxi, a lift you arrange yourself, or a night's accommodation. Plan so you do not need them: aim for the departure before the last one.

What people search for

Where do I find the last bus back?
On the route's own SSL timetable page, linked from every route page on this site. Read the column for the direction back, for your day of the week, and check it is the season and school calendar in force.
What happens if I miss the last bus?
SSL publishes nothing later. At the airport the taxis wait in the parking zone; in Tórshavn, Visit Tórshavn arranges airport taxis. In a village the options are a taxi, a lift or a bed for the night, so aim for the departure before the last one.
Can I rely on the last ferry back from Mykines?
No. An Atlantic crossing on a small vessel can be cancelled at short notice in either direction, and the operator decides that on the day. Treat the return as conditional and carry what you would need for a night on the island.

No signal in the valley? The timetable is already on your phone

Faroe Bus for Android plans SSL bus and ferry trips by place and keeps the timetables on your phone when the signal drops — in the valleys and on the trails, where the tourist board warns coverage can be limited, the bus home is still one tap away.
