The Faroe Islands with children, without a car
Last checked: 14 October 2026
The short answer
Base yourself in Tórshavn and the buses do the work: the town buses are free, and the tourist board calls them a great way to explore the capital. The duck pond in Viðarlundin, the renovated Grasagarður playground, the aquarium, a four-pool swimming hall and the Nordic House are all in town. For a day out, the board's favourite playground is in Søldarfjørður, a stop on route 400, and there are more at the ends of routes 300 and 500.

Tórshavn on the free town buses
Everything here is inside the capital, where the red town buses cost nothing and short legs suit short legs.
- Viðarlundin, the park in the middle of town, with a duck pond for the first walk of the trip.
- Grasagarður, which the tourist board describes as a big, fully renovated playground in central Tórshavn, open all day for all ages.
- Sandágerð, the largest family-friendly beach in Tórshavn.
- Føroya Sjósavn, the aquarium, which has a game for curious little ones.
- Svimjihøllin í Gundadali, the swimming hall, with four pools that the board calls perfect for kids and family fun.

When it rains
It will. The tourist board's rainy-day list is short and practical: the smallest cinema you have ever seen, the National Art Gallery with its children's drawing section, pottery painting, a swim in one of the pools, the aquarium, and the local theatre, which often has shows for children.

The Nordic House with children
The Nordic House says plainly that children are welcome, and tells you how it works.
- You can pick up paper and pencils at reception and borrow games and books for your visit.
- Children must be supervised inside, and running, shouting and climbing belong on the grass outside.
- The wooden floor is not suitable for strollers: leave the pram outside, to the right of the entrance, where you can see it from the café.
- Changing tables are on both floors, in the accessible toilets, and you are welcome to breastfeed anywhere in the house.

Playgrounds at the end of a bus ride
A local writer's playground favourites on the tourist board's site turn out to be a surprisingly good bus itinerary.
- Søldarfjørður, the writer's family's first choice: a homemade playground half-hidden among trees, found by its colourful fence facing the road, and it even has a toilet. Søldarfjørður is a stop on routes 400 and 401.
- Sørvágur, by the football pitch and sheltered from the wind between the houses. Sørvágur is the end of route 300, the airport bus.
- Viðareiði, on the writer's list of others worth a visit, which the board's own listing calls the most scenic place in the islands for children to climb. Route 500 from Klaksvík ends there.
- Bøur, also on that list of others, at the end of weekday route 350 — plan the return before you go.
- A swim on Suðuroy: Pálshøll, the islands' only 50-metre pool, has a children's pool, and route 700 stops at Páls Høll. In Klaksvík the swimming hall has a 25-metre pool and a water slide.

Eating out with children
Two places publish a children's offer, and one needs checking.
- Hamsa's own menu has a children's section, from a kids' burger to a children's butter chicken.
- The tourist board names Bitin for healthy kids' menus and Café Paname for its board games.
- The board also describes HAPS with a children's playroom, cartoons and a PlayStation. HAPS has since moved into the bowling hall at Á Hálsi, so ask whether the playroom moved with it.

Small things that make the day easier
The tourist board says you can safely carry only a credit card, because everywhere accepts it — though the Villingadalsfjall walking fee goes in a mailbox, so keep a little cash for walks — and that taxis carry a child seat. For the classic family day trip without a car, it recommends the ferry out to Nólsoy.

Asked before you go
What people search for
- What can you do with kids in Tórshavn without a car?
- Ride the free town buses to the Viðarlundin duck pond, the Grasagarður playground, Sandágerð beach, the aquarium and the four-pool swimming hall; in the rain, try the National Art Gallery's drawing section or the small cinema.
- Are Faroese buses free for children?
- Tórshavn's town buses are free for everyone. Regional SSL buses and ferries are ticketed; the Tourist Travel Card has a child price.
- Is there a good day trip for families by bus or ferry?
- The tourist board suggests the ferry to Nólsoy. By bus, Søldarfjørður's playground on route 400 and Sørvágur's at the end of route 300 make easy half-days.
No signal in the valley? The timetable is already on your phone
Faroe Bus for Android plans SSL bus and ferry trips by place and keeps the timetables on your phone when the signal drops — in the valleys and on the trails, where the tourist board warns coverage can be limited, the bus home is still one tap away.
