On foot from Tjørnuvík
The mountain path between Tjørnuvík and Saksun is the usual car-free route. Reach Tjørnuvík on weekday route 202 from Oyrarbakki, itself reached on route 400 from Tórshavn.
By taxi or tour
A taxi from the main road, a rental car, or a guided tour are the practical options, and for most visitors the honest recommendation.
By bus
What the operator publishes
- Route 202, the nearest northern Streymoy service, runs between Oyrarbakki and Tjørnuvík. Saksun is not on it.
- No other route in the SSL network lists Saksun among its published stops.
- This is not a gap in our research: it is the published position of the network, and it is the single most useful thing to know before planning a car-free day here.

The part people forget
Getting back from Saksun
Because there is no bus, there is no last bus to miss — but there is also nothing to rescue you. If you walk in from Tjørnuvík you must walk back out, or have a vehicle arranged. Do not set off across the mountain on the assumption that something will be running at the other end.
On foot
Walking and hiking connections
The Tjørnuvík–Saksun crossing is a genuine hillwalk over open mountain: exposed, indistinct in cloud, and with no shelter and no transport at the Saksun end. Allow far more time than the distance suggests, check the forecast, and tell someone your plan.

Saksun in brief
Saksun is a scattering of turf-roofed houses above a tidal lagoon in western Streymoy. It is one of the most photographed places in the country and it has no scheduled bus service at all.

Saksun is private farmland as well as a view. Stay on marked paths and respect access signage.
Good to know
- Access to parts of the valley has been restricted in the past. Check locally before assuming a route across the land is open.
- Tjørnuvík's own bus, route 202, does not run at weekends, so the walking option is weekday-only too.
